An hour-long early-morning flight from Kathmandu along the Himalaya to Mount Everest, with a window view for every passenger.
Overview
A mountain flight in Nepal is the easiest way to see Mount Everest with your own eyes. You take off from Kathmandu at sunrise and fly east along the Himalaya for about an hour, passing some of the highest mountains on Earth before turning back, so passengers on both sides of the plane get the view.
No trekking, fitness or acclimatisation is needed, and it fits easily into a morning in Kathmandu. It's a favourite with travelers who are short on time, families, and anyone who wants to see Everest without walking for two weeks to reach it.
Every mountain flight below is booked through our trusted, government-licensed local partners, who arrange your hotel pickup, check-in and return.
What you see on a mountain flight
The flight follows the Himalaya east from Kathmandu. On a clear morning you pass Langtang, Dorje Lakpa and Gauri Shankar, then Cho Oyu, and finally Mount Everest with Lhotse and Makalu nearby. The crew point out each peak as it comes into view, and passengers often get a turn to look from the cockpit.
How the morning works
- Early pickup from your hotel in Kathmandu
- Check-in at the domestic terminal (bring your passport)
- About one hour in the air along the mountains
- Back at your hotel in time for breakfast
Best time for a mountain flight
The clearest skies are from October to December and from March to May. Flights leave early because the mountains are usually clearest in the morning. In the monsoon (June to September), cloud often hides the peaks and flights are more likely to be delayed.
Mountain flight or helicopter tour?
A mountain flight is quicker and more affordable, and shows you the whole range from the air. An Everest helicopter tour flies much closer, lands at Kala Patthar, and includes breakfast facing Everest, at a higher price. Choose the flight for the view, and the helicopter for the full experience.
Good to know
Mountain flights depend on the weather. If a flight is cancelled, you can usually rebook for another morning or get a refund, as confirmed by our local partner. Plan it early in your stay, so there's time to rebook if needed.
